New Jersey Continuing Education Requirements for Real Estate Professionals

3 min read

If you're a New Jersey real estate professional, staying current with your Continuing Education (CE) requirements is essential for maintaining your license and serving clients with confidence.

New legislation signed into law in July 2026 updates the state's Continuing Education requirements for salespersons, brokers, broker-salespersons, and referral licensees.

While these changes do not take effect until July 1, 2027, understanding the new requirements now will help you prepare for your next licensing cycle.

At Terrie O'Connor Realtors Real Estate School, we're committed to making Continuing Education convenient, engaging, and fully compliant with New Jersey Real Estate Commission requirements.

Updated CE Requirements for New Jersey Salespersons

Beginning July 1, 2027, licensed salespersons must complete 18 Continuing Education credits, including:

  • 3 credits in Ethics

  • 2 credits in Agency

  • 2 credits in Fair Housing

  • 2 credits in Current Issues & Legal Updates

  • 1 credit in Safety

The remaining credits may be completed through approved elective courses. Additionally, at least two credits in a mandatory topic area (excluding Safety) must be completed in person or through a live webinar.

Updated CE Requirements for Brokers

Broker and Broker-Salesperson licensees will also complete 18 total CE credits, with additional mandatory coursework in:

  • Ethics

  • Agency

  • Fair Housing

  • Current Issues & Legal Updates

  • Fiduciary Responsibility

  • Broker Supervision

  • Safety

Like salespersons, brokers must complete at least two mandatory-topic credits (excluding Safety) through an in-person class or live webinar.

New Online Continuing Education Standards

The updated legislation also introduces new standards for online learning.

Self-paced online CE courses will require students to earn a minimum score of 75% on the course assessment to receive credit. Live webinars will include participant interaction requirements through multiple attendance check-ins, while traditional classroom courses remain unchanged.

Why These Changes Matter

Continuing Education is more than a licensing requirement. It's an investment in your career. The updated curriculum places greater emphasis on ethics, agency relationships, fair housing, legal compliance, fiduciary responsibility, and consumer protection, helping New Jersey real estate professionals provide exceptional service in today's evolving marketplace.
