Antioxidants (i.e. vitamins C and E and glutathione) as well as protein thiols are essential to protect cells from damage due to free radical stress. This study was undertaken to assess the levels of plasma antioxidant enzymes and erythrocyte protein thiols in infants and children with various forms of congenital heart disease. Blood samples were taken from 27 patients ranging in age from 0 to 17 years. Antioxidant enzymes were measured by spectrophotometric methods and protein thiols by the Ellman's method. A reduction in levels of superoxide dismutase (p=0.000) and catalase (p=0.005) was seen in patients with cyanotic lesions compared to those without cyanosis. Erythrocyte protein thiol levels were reduced in patients with cyanotic lesions (p=0.011). In cyanotic patients, there was a negative correlation between mean oxygen saturation and levels of erythrocyte catalase (r=-0.61, p=0.012). In conclusion, reduced activity of antioxidant enzymes was observed in patients with cyanotic lesions, suggesting that free radical reactions are increased in such patients. This study suggests the presence of subclinical oxidative stress in patients with congenital heart disease. The possibility of using antioxidant supplementation in these patients should be explored.Augmented Reality vs. Virtual Reality: What’s The Difference? It’s not unusual for terms such as “augmented reality” and “virtual reality” to be thrown around the same day by those who either don’t understand the technology they are describing or are trying to sound very smart. But there is an important distinction between the two terms: while augmented reality (AR) does augment real life, virtual reality (VR) doesn’t exist in real life. But how can something which doesn’t exist be real? You know that feeling when someone mentions something or describes something and you aren’t sure whether they are being literal or using a common phrase which you understand. For example
